Have you seen your children’s back-to-school supply list yet? Does it include a box of Ziploc® brand bags with Easy Open Tabs? My children’s lists always do.
While you are at Kroger or Food 4 Less buying Ziploc® brand bags with Easy Open Tabs for your kids, be sure to pick up some extra boxes for yourself, especially the gallon-sized Ziploc® brand Storage and Freezer bags with Easy Open Tabs. These large, sturdy bags are workhorses in the kitchen.
How do I use Ziploc® brand bags with Easy Open Tabs in my kitchen? Several ways. First, as I will show you in the easy recipe for yogurt-marinated chicken skewers that I share below, Ziploc® brand bags with Easy Open Tabs are my first choice for marinating meat. Whenever you are working with raw meat, you want to avoid cross-contamination. That is why I use Ziploc® brand bags with Easy Open Tabs to marinate chicken and beef. The bag will not break or leak, and when I am finished, I dispose of the bag safely, without the germs from the raw meat coming into contact with my sink or countertops.
Similarly, I use Ziploc® brand bags with Easy Open Tabs when I want to coat raw meat with flour, especially when I make beef stew. I simply combine stew, meat, flour and seasonings in a Ziploc® brand bag with Easy Open Tabs and shake to coat. Again, by using a Ziploc® brand bag with Easy Open Tabs rather than a plate, clean-up is easy and safe.
If you were to open my freezer, you would find that I use Ziploc® brand Freezer bags with Easy Open Tabs to store all kinds of foods, from baked goods to fruit. I buy a lot of local fruit at the farmers market during the summer and, whenever possible, I freeze that fruit to enjoy all winter long.
Some fruits — like blueberries, sour cherries and cranberries — freeze extremely well. Just place berries on a baking tray in a single layer and place in the freezer until hard. Once frozen, the berries or cherries can be packed into Ziploc® brand Freezer bags with Easy Open Tabs for easy storage. These fruits are perfect to use in baking or smoothies.
I have a lot of tricks to minimize waste in my kitchen, such as saving chicken bones and vegetable scraps to make chicken broth. Again, I store these items in gallon-sized Ziploc® brand Freezer bags with Easy Open Tabs until I have a free afternoon at home to cook my chicken stock.
But back to that recipe for yogurt-marinated chicken skewers. When school starts again and your afternoons and evenings are full of carpools and soccer practices, you will need a plan for getting dinner on the table in a hurry.
Marinate these chicken kabobs in the morning and they can sit in the fridge all day. When you get home, simply thread the chicken onto skewers — with some vegetables if you are so inclined — and grill or broil for 10-12 minutes. Serve with some rice or pasta on the side and dinner is done. How quick and easy is that?
Ingredients
- 2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breast
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- Juice and zest of two lemons
- 3 TB olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, sliced

- In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the yogurt, lemon juice and zest, olive oil, garlic, parsley, paprika and salt and pepper.
- Pour the yogurt mixture into the Ziploc® brand Storage bag with Easy Open Tabs with the chicken and seal, pushing out as much air as possible.
- Shake the bag to coat the chicken with the marinade.
- Refrigerate for at least four and up to eight hours.
- Thread the chicken onto skewers, alternating with vegetables if desired.
- Place skewers on preheated grill brushed with oil.
